Does anyone know how you store the flower cannas in the winter? Do you have to keep dirt over them or not? TIA!!
Storing cannas?
I dig mine up after they have wilted from the frost. I cut them down to the rhizome and shake off all the loose dirt. I let them sit out for a few days to dry out. If you store them while they are wet or damp they will rot. I then store them in a basket of crumpled newspaper in my basement for the winter.
Reply:I leave my zone 8 cannas in the ground all year long. If you loose yours, let me know, have red, yellow, and a variegated leaf with orange blooms. They're all in serious need of thinning.
What did all the bulb and rhisome plants do in the wild before we humans dug them up?
Reply:I dig 'em up, brush the excess dirt off, toss them into a brown paper bag (with a little peat moss if I have, but none if I don't), and in a cool, dry place.
lol...just to answer Rey ...what dd all the bulbs and rhizomes do before we dug them up?....well, they only grew where they lived from year to year!! The cannas were certainly not growing wild here in Ohio! (That doesn't mean I'm not willing to accomodate them for the winter in order to enjoy them!)
