Can anyone tell me where to find the Marriage Feast Of Canna in the Bible.?

I am getting married and would like to have this passage read. If anyone else has any suggestions for a reading by all means let me know. Thanks PS.. It does not necessarily have to be from the Bible..

Can anyone tell me where to find the Marriage Feast Of Canna in the Bible.?
John 2

Jesus Changes Water to Wine

1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."

4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."

5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[a]

7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.

8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."

They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."

11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

*** Congratulations! ***
Reply:Wedding feast is from John Chapter 2 verses 1-11.

We had the Apache Blessing read at our ceremony. You can find it here: http://www.tbwo.us/Ceremony/apache.htm

There is a longer version, which is what we used. I couldn't find it online so here it is:

Apache Blessing

Now you will feel no rain,

For each of you will be shelter for the other.

Now you will feel no cold,

For each of you will be warmth to the other.

Nor there will be no loneliness,

For each of you will be companion to the other.

Now you are two persons,

But there is only one life before you.

May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead,

And through all the years.

May happiness be your companion

And your days together be good and long upon the earth.

Treat yourselves and each other with respect,

And remind yourselves often of what brought you together.

Give the highest priority to the tenderness, gentleness,

and kindness that your connection deserves.

When frustration, difficulties and fear assail your relationship,

As they threaten all relationships at one time or another,

Remember to focus on what is right between you,

Not only the part which seems wrong.

In this way, you can ride out the storms

When clouds hide the face of the sun in your lives—

Remembering that even if you lose sight of it for a moment,

The sun is still there.

And if each of you takes responsibility for the quality of your life together,

It will be marked by abundance and delight.
Reply:Look in John 2. I think that is what you are looking to find.
Reply:We had this passage read, both in English, and in German, because it is traditional, and my favorite for weddings...

1 Corinthians 13

Love

1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Did the Bombs flown from Prestwick kill the children in Canna? Who refueled them? Do you sleep at night?

Regardless of the details of our delivering bombs to Israel, every one of us taxpayers has been forced to pay for them ever since our congress started sending them 3 billion a year in the 70s.

Prior to that, Israel obtained funding by issuing "Defense Bonds" which were purchased by anyone supporting them. Then, thanks to the Israeli Lobby pressure, our Congress started forcing all of us to pay whether we wanted to or not. If Mina and I could have legally withheld that portion of our taxes, we would have.

Reply:it doesn't make any difference where the bombs came from as far as I'm concerned all bombs are disgusting and so are the people who instigate it and you can bet your life that theyre in their beds losing no sleep they should be made to live where they cause suffering to countless innocents, and their families with them, then maybe they'd think twice before dropping bombs where ever it suits them .all lives are precious soldiers and civilians but they're nothing to these megalomaniacs

Do you need to cut the old leaf of a canna lilly right down this time of year or leave as they are?

If you live in an area of hard frosts, dig them up,leave on all foliage, dry them out and store in frost free place till spring. In frost free zones you can leave then in. When the foliage has died cut back to 2'' from soil level

Do you need to cut the old leaf of a canna lilly right down this time of year or leave as they are?
Do you mean Kaffir lily? If so, you only need to remove the seed heads after they stop flowering and let the leaves die down.
Reply:leave +mulch to protect from weather.
Reply:Where are you? I'm in zone 5, and mine are dug up waiting for warm weather. Here they die in the cold.
Reply:In zone 7, we cut them back as soon as the cool weather kills the leaf, so as to keep a neat appearance. You can leave them if you like, but sometime before spring, the old growth needs to be removed to make way for the new,
Reply:depending on your zone but in zone 7 we cut them back to the ground and cover with mulch ( pine straw, bark etc. ) before the freezing temperatures come
Reply:We have a tremendous amount of Canna Lillies in our yard and have the best results when we cut them back in the winter. This allows the roots to continue to grow and the bulbs to divide and.... the plant is not trying to feed the stalks and leaves which will eventually get burned if they get a freeze. Don't worry given the right amount of water and fertilizer your Cannas will come back to great heights each year. Ours average 5 to 6 feet in height on average. Good luck with yours and take care. :%26gt;)
Reply:Hi, here in the UK we have to protect canna from the winters as the corms will rot if we leave them out in the ground because of the frosts. Most gardeners plant up the corms in large pots and over winter in a glass house or some where cool and dry. taking only the dead or damaged leaves away.

As I am not sure in which zone you are in I would say err on the side of care!.

Best to treat them like they need the protection of being under cover in winter. On the storing of them over winter keep them cool and the compost damp but no over watered . I try to keep them on their sides in their pots. In the spring I tease some of the top layer of compost away and replace with a mixture with some plant food added for slow release.

Hope some of info might be of help.
Reply:leave till spring then cut down they are a bulb

The front of my house faces east can i plant canna on the north side as a hedge? i live in Oklahoma?

I've found that most important is the soil. This past spring I moved mine to a more sunny location but really poor soil. After an entire summer of sun, they are like miniatures and never bloomed. Last year in a half sunny spot, but way better soil they were almost 6 feet tall! So as long as they get a fair amount of sun and good fertile soil you should have success. Good Luck!

The front of my house faces east can i plant canna on the north side as a hedge? i live in Oklahoma?
South would be better....but anywhere it can receive full sun is satisfactory.
Reply:It will probably grow but not bloom as much as it would if planted in full sun. But then I have one that popped up in a crack in my driveway, I am sure it is not only in part shade there but it also rarely gets water.

Can any one tell me how to register a new canna? thanks paul h?

you can put some bone meal down on them or some blood meal that way they should have the nutrients they need to get a good start in the spring.
Reply:Mixture of compost an mulch about 3 inches thick will help these overwinter. Don't pack it down,

I need to find out how to seperate my canna bulbs without killing them all.And when should I do this?

Just pull the apart, it is nearly impossible to kill them. I had one that our dog dug up 3 times last year and it finally grew to an enormous size and multiplied about 10 times.

After digging canna bulbs, what is the best way to store them for the winter?

Knock off all the soil and set them in a dry dark place to dry out. Once all the foliage had died back and the rhizomes have dried then you can store them in a cardboard box with some peat moss. Just make sure everything is dry. The rhizomes can take some freezing temps so you can store them in a garage until spring.

Here is a site you can refer to as well:

When is the best time to plant canna lily seeds?

Some of the earlier answerers are confused. I have Canna lilies grown from seed. They are the lumpy bits left after the flowers die off, just like most other flowers. Lots of people in northern Australia would be out of business if they had to divide rhizomes to get stock. Also- they die back in winter (I get -10 C temperatures) but they come back in spring.

When is the best time to plant canna lily seeds?
canna lilies do have seeds when the flower dies back you will see green pods when these pods dry out you will find hard brown seeds these are canna lily seeds they have been use for jewelry and for shot gun shots by the indian in the olden days although they are rhimozones they also seed. Report It

Reply:In the spring
Reply:Sneaky question, dude. And you've already fooled a few people. The fact is, there is no such thing as canna lily seeds. canna lilies grow from bulbs and only in very warm, tropical climates.

Edit: In response to "Sptfyr" below, please note that rhizomes, tubers, corms or bulbs are pretty much the same thing in that they are the preferred names of different horticulturists.
Reply:early spring,,, but after all danger of frost is past.
Reply:Well, since canna don't have seed, then never. Canna are neither seed nor bulb, they are Rhizomes that spread and multiply underground and are easily divided. Now, having said that you plant canna in the spring and if you live zone 7 or higher then Autumn will be fine. I wouldn't do it in the middle of the summer though because there won't be enough time to flower.
Reply:A canna is a bulb that you should plant indoors in late winter to give it a good start. That is, if you live in the Northeast. Further south, get it into the ground as early as the soil warms. They are beautiful!

How long does it take for Canna bulbs to start sprouting?

I live in Central Ca and the weather is nice, lows hit about 45 and highs about 73*F. I planted my bulbs about 10 days ago but no signs of green. How long does it usually take to see above ground activity?

How long does it take for Canna bulbs to start sprouting?
Cannas like a lot of moisture and some varieties will even thrive in swampy or submerged conditions. If kept damp, they should sprout when the ground warms up. Be patient. When they finally sprout, they will grow like crazy. They are one of my favorite plants.

Good gardening this season!
Reply:Give them another week or two depending on variety.

UGH, I have my first pre-canna class tonight so we can get married in the church.?

I guess I am worried because we are not super religious.... I believe in God and the bible but we don't go do church or pray very often. My fiancé doesn’t believe in anything so that worries me. We are meeting with the Minster who is going to marry us tonight. For our first meeting class the Minster was a real jerk so I am little worried about the new one but he can’t be any worst. Anyone have any good stories for me? Horror stories, funny stories or did it go great for you guys?

UGH, I have my first pre-canna class tonight so we can get married in the church.?
i got married in a catholic church and we were forced to do the marriage classes even though we had been together for 7 years at that point.

our preist was a jerk too!! i seriously wanted to punch him at every meeting. i called him father hitler (not very nice i know, and never to his face, but he was a total dictator!!!)

good luck though, hope you have better luck than i did!
Reply:Are you sure you're ready to get married since you're obviously whiny and tempermental? I hope your fiance comes to his senses - love the dill weed comment - very mature of you. Report It

Reply:my husband and i got married three months ago....we had to have the classes. it was nerve-racking! but it turned out ok. our minister was sooo old...he married my parents also. so he couldnt hardly hear a word we'd say anyway! so if Tommy (my husband) said something stupid or if we didnt understand what the preacher was saying...we'd just nod our heads in agreement. ha. and at the wedding the minister said "We are here to celebrate the joining of "Stephen and Tommy"....um...my name is Stephanie! hahahaha....but wedding without amusement...are boring : ) Point is...the classes make you nervous...but once they are over....its so worth it! : )
Reply:This is one of the reasons we decided not to marry in the Catholic Church....even though he belongs to a church...
Reply:Our pre-cana really wasn't too bad. But we only had to go once for 8 hours with a deacon, the priest came in later on. It really didn't center too much on "religion" as we aren't very religious either, just somewhat hokey. My advice to you though, is don't go into it with a negative attitude, it'll make it worse. It doesn't last forever and won't hurt you.
Reply:Question: Why in the world do you even WANT to get married in the Catholic Church????? It has nothing to do with "not being super religious"....it has to do with your beliefs. And especially since your fiance "doesn't believe in anything." You are a hypocrite and should be married elsewhere. Don't go to the classes if they are such a burden. Do you think you may actually LEARN something....perhaps how to strengthen a marriage that will (and it will!) have rocky and turbulent times?

Good luck to you....you are going to need it! On to the reception....the most important part, cuz obviously the wedding ceremony isn't!
Reply:While I didn't enjoy those classes, I have to say they were informative. Think of it as a counseling class rather than a religious obligation and you'll do just fine.
Reply:I hated these classes. It seemed stupid to take them since we had lived together for 7 years but of of course it was required for us to be married in the Catholic church. I couldnt imagine what the priest (who is single and supposedly celebate) could offer in the way of telling us anything about relationships or marriage. If I had to do it again, I would have found a minister on the internet and gotten married in the park!
Reply:We met in a married couple's house (they were married for over 20 yrs). We sat around with 6 other couples. My husband and I were the only ones that didn't live or sleep together already so WE were the ones who felt out of place. I can't say I learned anything from it. I knew everything about raising our children catholic and all of that stuff. It was nice meeting new people and learning about their lives. I don't believe it's really necessary to know who is going to balance the checkbook before you get married. That stuff sort of works itself out but they made us go around the room asking us who will deal with the finances....! Stuff like that we could have done without.

Good luck at your pre-cana!!
Reply:We were married 3 weeks ago, in a Catholic Church. My husband is not very religious at all ( similar to yours) , and I am only slightly so.

We were really nervous about going to pre-canna, but it was okay. Honestly we loved it and had a ton of fun going to the meetings.

I know it is hard to believe, but I really feel like we benefited from it even though we've been together for years and years.
Reply:If your not super religious, how come you decided to go through the church? Anyways, all the classes are made to help you strenghten your marriage. Listen to what they say and apply it to your relationship. We did the weekend retreat as well and it made a HUGE difference in how we see each other. Now we use what we learned to keep our marriage going.
Reply:I love the first answer...Father Hitler. Ha ha. You can still run BUbbles!!!!!! sell the house get all you money back. Ha ha ha hah ahahahahaha!!! Especially since you are gonna have a crazy MIL. Watch out!!!!! You can always come and run away with me.
Reply:My fiancé doesn’t believe in anything so that worries me.

That says volumes, and could be the reason that you are having such anxiety and so much trouble with these classes. A marriage is between a man, a woman and God, when one party takes God out of the equation how can it be a real marriage. Just some food for thought.

Can I thin and transplant my canna lilies mid-summer?

I live in the southern Arizona desert. It is very dry (we are currently in a drought) and I water them every day

Can I thin and transplant my canna lilies mid-summer?
It is not ever a good idea to transplant and or thin out any type of outside plants in mid summer. My suggestion is to wait until fall, when it cools down some. The heat and dryness will kill your plants.
Reply:You sure can. Water them like crazy for the rest of the summer--gallons and gallons and gallons... or leave them until September to save money.
Reply:You can but it is not the best time, they really don't have time before winter to fully recover from the transplant shock before winter sets in.

Best to do this late fall thur late winter

How do I care for a Canna Lilly?

I know that I have to bring it in during the winter months but that is about it?

How do I care for a Canna Lilly?
This is what I found on another answers site. There is more information on the link.

Debra from the USA I've got calla Lilly's, white, black and pink. They're my favorite flower. They are easy to grow. In answering some of these questions, I'll explane the prosses they go through, through-out the year.

First, if you move or re-pot or split the callas they die back, not dying, but only to rid of shocked leaves. They quickly grow back. Health and new. All during the winter, I had healthy tall leaves. In the White calla garden, when spring hits, I had flowers galore. They seem to only last till the hot sun comes, around June. Always cutting the old leaves and ugly flowers, makes the calla's look fresh. That also help the groth of new flower and leaves.

After the spring flowers have opened, you'll have leaves falling, and new ones comming up from under. Cut the old ones back. Leaving any flowers and new leaves. The bulbs under the ground are multipling. So you will have more next year. I have my white callas in full sun. They really love it. I water every day, keeping the groung moist, but not wet.

I live 40 miles in land from San Fransico, so it gets pretty hot,In the summer, It's never under 70. The winters are as low as 30%. Always clipping my callas of old flowers and leaves is the secret to a beautiful and happy plant.

Now the pink callas I have in a pot, and they Hate the sun. They were dormant during the winter. The leaves died back. When spring came, I gave the pot some full sun to boost it, into growing. As soon as the flowers came up, I moved it to the shade. I'll have double the flowers next year. I have the bulbs in a pot with Asian Lillys. There happy being watered daily, but not wet.

The black callas were here when I moved in my house three years ago. There in the shade, and grow close to the grund. Only 8 inches high. Spreading just like a bulb. I've had two flowers in three years. I think that's why the are $44.00 a bulb.
Reply:Very fascinating response... unfortunately the question wasn't about the Calla Lilly... the question was about the CANNA lilly. Report It

Reply:Just love it and talk to it and stuff.

Canna lilly care

Q. I am new to growing canna lillies. I live near the Idaho/Utah border. Does it get cold enough up here to have to dig up the cannas in winter?, or will they be OK in the ground? Any other tips you can provide will help. Thanks. P.S. Your site rocks!

- Dave Butte

A. Thanks for the kind words! I'd dig those babies up if I were in your zone...brrr....But I have very fond memories of summer in your part of the world, especially the color of the sky. Anyway, dig the bulbs, brush the dirt off, and store in a ventilated bag (like an onion bag or pantyhose). It's even better if you can put sawdust or cedar shavings or something in between the cannas in storage so they don't touch each other. Don't let them freeze in storage, either!
Reply:There's a little bit of information about how to care for them here:

How to take care of a canna lilly in the winter?
Cannas make a bulb (lots of them). Dig them up after the first killing frost (one that kills or browns the leaves). Shake off the dirt. Put them in a cardboard box buried in sawdust and put them in a cool, dark, dry place. They'll often last a couple of years. You can plant them early in the spring. This method will give you many more plants. You can also just leave them where they are. They will come back in the spring after dying back. The bulbs get crowded and do better if you dig them up and spread them out every few years. Even if you think you dig up all the bulbs, you probably won't. A little water in the spring and "wallah" more cannas. The only real danger to them is usually grub worms that eat the bulbs. But fortunately there are usually plenty of them down there and I have never had any lost this way.

This depends on when and how deeply you plant. Generally, in spring or summer, cannas will appear within two weeks. They love water, so water heavily the first year. For those who plant in fall, look for cannas after the daffodils have bloomed. As days grow warmer, the shoots will seek sunlight. Plant corms anywhere from 2-4 inches below soil depending on soil type. Heavier soils such as clay are hard to push through, so plant in clay more shallowly.

Anyone know anything about red Canna's?We just moved into a new home that had a whole bunch.%26amp; my hubby cut
It is still early in the year, and you can't hardly kill a canna. Yes they will come back and probably still produce blooms this year, they are a summer flowering not spring flowering and even with it warming up early this year, they have not bloomed yet, so unless you are in Hawaii or someplace tropical that I would have no clue about, what your hubby did will probably only make them grow back thicker than before! Cannas are really tough
Reply:Cannas grow 1½ to 5 feet or more, depending on variety. Their large, glossy green leaves are 6 to 12 inches wide. Their blossoms are clustered at the top of flower spikes which can be up to one foot long. Blossom size varies with the species planted. Cannas are available in red, rose/pink, yellow, red with yellow, and dark red with bronze foliage

Cannas may be started indoors by planting them three to four inches deep in pots, then transplanting them outside. They will also bloom well if planted directly into the garden as soon as the soil has warmed and danger of frost has passed. Plant the rhizomes 3-4 inches deep and 1½ to 3 feet apart. Cannas grow best in full sun and hot weather, providing they have adequate moisture and a soil high in organic matter. They will bloom in a warm site that gets part day sun, such as along a house wall. They bloom mid-summer to frost.

In the fall, dig up the rhizomes, cut the stems back to 2-3 inches, and let them dry. Leave them in a box in a cool part of the house where they will not freeze, such as a basement where the temperatures range between 40-50 degrees. Every few years, the rhizomes may be divided. When dividing, each piece must have an eye or growing point on it. Let the cut-up rhizomes dry for a few days before planting them.

I am giving you information for a location that experiences freezing temperatures since I don't know where you are located.
Reply:It depends on what zone you are in. IN the north they need to be dug up and stored in a cool dry place and then re-planted in the spring.
Reply:THESE PLANTS PRODUCE IN EARLY SPRING OR EARLIER FALL THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL FLOWER TRY NOT TO CUT THEM DONE BEFORE THEY'VE HAD A CHANCE TO BLOSSOM IF YOU WANT GIVE THEM WATER MIXED WITH MIRACLE WILL BOOST THEM TO GROW AND BLOOM GOOD LUCK. THEY BLOOM ONCE A YEAR
Reply:Cannas are bulb plants, so if the bulbs are not ALL dug up, they will return and will also multiply.

I have a purple leaf canna lilly?

my plant is 4ft.tall in bud in a plant pot. i need some advice on caring for it, ie: is it hardy, will it survive in a large container, it is in bud at the moment, how do i feed it, i have never owned one before and need all the help i can get. thanks

I have a purple leaf canna lilly?
I have several plants, they are outside and doing well and multiplying. The blooms are red on mine and they love water and sunshine.Mine are about 4-5ft high so keep this in mind.
Reply:If you live in the UK it will need some winter protection.

It will survive OK in the container. When the first frosts strike cut off everything and put it in a greenhouse or frost free shed. Don't let it dry out completely but be really careful you don't want it to rot off either. Better too dry than too wet.

In early spring repot it into fresh compost and start watering and feeding.

I left one in the ground last year by mistake and it has come up again this season but it is in very free draining soil and last winter was not particularly harsh.
Reply:Do you want to leave it in the pot or plant in outside? I have mine in a big pot outside to keep it contained...it dies back in the winter (tho I keep it out of the frost). I cut off the brown leaves/stems, and it comes back. I keep it watered, but have neglected it on many occasions, but it still keeps coming back. =)

If you plant it in the ground, it will multiply...so take heed in where you would want many of them to grow.

I add some Miracle Grow potting soil to the old soil (maybe once a year). It seems to be enough to keep it happy.
Reply:We leave ours outside against a south facing wall in the summer. It is flowering now, even with all this wet weather. It will die back in the winter so we just put the pot in an unheated greenhouse and leave it to dry out until the first signs of life in the spring. Then back outside mid May.

A little general plant food in the growing season helps.

I have just planted 2 canna's. They arent reblooming, I have cut the dead heads off, but nothin. What do I do?

The leaves even look brown- I water them nightly, because we have been so dry. Am I doing something wrong? I have seen others planted in pots and they are thriving. I have them planted in a side bed that gets afternoon sun. Is this maybe not enough sun for them?

Cannas don't rebloom

Reply:Maybe they need a full day of sunshine. They love heat. Mine grew about 3ft. tall(!) and blooming now. I know it's short, but here in Pacific N.W., summer is on the cooler side. I planted mine in the full sun location, though. Perhaps, I should've planted against the house on the southside, where it is more warmer.

Canna Lillys In Ohio?

Really want these, want to know if you have these do you have to dig them up every fall %26amp; What time of year to you plant them?

Canna Lillys In Ohio?
Well we are in Ohio and we have to dig them up every year. We didn't once and lost them all.....they were next to a foundation on the house too....with a thick mulch of autumn leaves. I would just plan on digging them up. Ohio weather is pretty unpredictable ya know... I'd plant them in the spring. The end of May.
Reply:plant then in june. at frost they die to the groung and look dead. in your area this will happen in october or maybe november. the best part of the canna lily is that they tollerate and thrive in full sun and also flower till november. in the fall after frost, cut the plant and dig it up. then store the bulb till spring. cannas are really worth buying. they flower all the time in full sun and if you dont get a flower you have amazing tropical foilage
Reply:I had Calla lillies growing right next to the foundation of my house on the southern side of the house when we lived 30 miles off the Ohio border. (near New Castle, PA) They wintered over fairly well. Putting mulch over them may help.

As for Cannas, the tall flowers that are orange, yellow, or red. Yes, you'll definitely want to bring those in. I had to bring them in to overwinter when I lived in the south.
Reply:I have these, and no you don't have to dig them and replant each year. The idea of digging them up each fall is to save the bulbs from frost, but we have never had a problem and ours are in a raised bed next to the house. To help keep them from freezing out you can mulch the flower bed well for the fall/winter months. Plants like the morning sun, with very well drained soil.

Hope this helps.

How to grow a canna lily?
Growing cannas from seed can be quite rewarding and a lot of fun.

Take a small triangular file or pet nail nippers and nick the dark hard outer coat of the canna seed just until you see the white layer beneath. Start the seeds out on a soak of hot water and let them sit a day or two. Sow the seeds in a good seed medium and place in a warm spot to germinate. Do not let them dry out. In a week or two, the seedlings will be up. Transplant the seedlings to 4"-6" pots to establish before planting out in a sunny location Most cannas started from seed will bloom in the first season.

Plant your cannas in the full sun. A minimum of 6 hours direct sunlight is required, the more sunlight, the better. If your cannas are stunted and do not bloom, one reason is that they may not be getting enough sunlight.

Ground Preparation

The ground should have lots of organic materials worked into it, compost, composted manure, leaves, grass clippings and kitchen garbage (peelings), egg shells, coffee grounds but no processed foods like meats, fats or anything of that nature). In other words if it is organic and will decompose, use it.

Planting

Plant the rhizome horizonally in the ground with the eyes or growing points facing up, if they are visible. The rhizomes do not have a top or bottom so there is no chance of planting them upside down.

Cannas can be planted outside in the early spring after the last frost in your area. Or you can start them sooner indoors, in March away from the frost and cold for an earlier plant and flowers.

Plant them 2 to 3 inches deep and 18 to 24 inches apart. They can also be planted for a block effect if you use the same variety or do not mind if the colors or varieties get mixed during growth. To achieve this effect, plant as many as possible about 6 inches apart, when grown this way they can make a very impressive display.

After planting, keep the rhizomes moist but not wet. When new growth appears they can be watered more heavily and tolerate wetter soil. Keeping a layer of mulch on and around the cannas will conserve water and will keep the weeds from growing. Some studies now are indicating that composting and mulching can inhibit and even deter some viruses and diseases.

Winter Storage

Canna Storage Cannas grown to the colder sides of zones 7 and below will have to be dug to survive winter. Let hard frost take the foliage. In the interim between then and colder conditions .. you will have a few weeks to prepare your cannas for winter. But don't wait until the ground starts to freeze. A thick layer of mulch will help if you can't get to right away. And if wet and cold temperatures are expected, get the cannas out of the ground ..asap! Cannas can be stored the winter season so in spring you can enjoy the same lovely plants you had this summer.

If your cannas are in pots, you have options. You can leave them in the pots and either bring into the house to a sunny location (southern exposure is best) where they will continue to grow and bloom. Water lightly though the winter months and use a a little fertilizer. Some natural “de-scented” fish emulsion fertilizers on the market now does nicely.

Follow the manufactures recommendations for plants in pots. Or you can just move the pots to a cool place after removing all the foliage. An area where the temperature is about 50º F is idea and will let the canna “sleep” until spring. Water lightly to keep moist during that period. A spray bottle works well for just a little water. If too dry, the roots and rhizomes will dehydrate. And if too wet, rot will set in. So try for a happy medium. You can also set the whole pot inside a clear plastic trash bag and fold loosely over the top. This will help retain moisture so watering may not even be needed.

If cannas are in the ground, dig them up, leaving as much soil around the roots as possible. You will want that soil to be moist, NOT wet. Let sit a few days if too wet. Put the whole “root ball” (clump) inside a large plastic bag ( a large trash bag will be fine). Clear bags are nice so you can see what goes on without having to open. Cover any bare roots or rhizomes with damp peat moss, filling the holes, gaps etc. with the peat. "Close" the bag by folding it over loosely and store in a cool place, but where the canna roots and rhizomes will not freeze. Again a temperature of around 50°F is good. Into spring, you will notice the clumps start to sprout.

As the weather warms and the danger of frost is gone, you can remove the cannas from the bags and plant them according to the above directions. Divide them at this time as your desire, making sure each rhizome has about 3 growing points or eyes. You can also move your pots outside again at this time and divide those clumps, if needed.

How do i store canna lillie Bulbs?

I hava a bunch of plants that some one already dug up. How can i store these until i'm ready to plant them.

How do i store canna lillie Bulbs?
Why are you storing them? They should be planted now
Reply:Place them in a brown paper bag, cover them with soil, and keep the bag in a dry, cool, and dark place. This will keep them dormant until you replant them. Always dig them up and store them in the fall as they will not survive the winter in most US climates.
Reply:in a cool damp environment like a refrigerator
Reply:I put mine in some earth in an indoor pot, and store it in my basement in a cool place. When it's spring and ready to plant the shoots are growing out of the pot. If you have a really nice pot such as a terra cotta one you could leave it in the pot all year and just cut the plant down to the earth level in the pot. Works for me.
Reply:If you store them in a box or a bin with sawdust, then you won't find any rotted bulbs when you get them out to plant them next season.
Reply:If you put them in a plastic bag with a few holes and leave them in your refridgerator until you are ready to plant them in the fall

Can you plant red canna bulb in wi zone 4?? P.S What do they look like?? Got these from a friend?

First time planting bulbs. I received bulbs as a gift. How do you plant??? Water??? Generally take care of??

Can you plant red canna bulb in wi zone 4?? P.S What do they look like?? Got these from a friend?
Yes, you can. But you need to dig them up in the fall, as they will die that far north if left in the ground through the winter.

Plant them about 6 inches down. Most likely your "bulb" or corm, will be a long-ish thing, much like a fresh ginger root (which you may know about if you're a cook). Lay them horizontally in the ground, with the little growing tips (if there are any), up.

Water after planting. Then, forget about it, unless there is a long drought. They will come up and bloom of their own accord, and they don't need any special tending.

In the fall, dig it up. You can even wait until the first frost nips the plant parts above ground. Cut off everything above ground, dig up the root (which should now be a good twice as big as when you planted it - if not more so). Put it in a brown paper bag in a cool dry place for the winter. A cellar, or an attached garage. Someplace that doesn't get below freezing.

Replant the following spring a couple weeks before your last frost date.
Reply:What "Cat" said. Canna are not winter hardy and because they are rather shallow rooted, it would be rare that they would last a zone-4 winter.

S/he makes a good point about the choice of storage. Don't just set them in newspaper or a paper bag in a storage shed or garage where they might freeze.

Good luck. Canna are beautiful flowering plants and will grow 4-6 feet in a season. You might even be able to get them to set out new corms and multiply your plantings.

Shoud i water my canna plants daily/100dg days?
they are pretty good in hot weather, but being underwatered causes the leaves to fade and not have such rich color and variegation....
Reply:I water mine daily and they are growing nicely.
Reply:in that sort of heat every dat probably won't hurt them - but try to give them lots of water so that it drains through the soil and encourages deep roots.

Also don't water the leaves as they'll burn in the sun.

Mike

http://www.iplgate.com
Reply:you will never water cannas to much!they love water!
Reply:Because canna gets so tall it needs a good, firm root system that goes relatively deep into the soil.

Watering them daily won't hurt the appearance of the plant but it will make the roots satisfied with shallow water. As a result they won't go very deep, and on a windy day the plants will be more likely to fall down.

Better to water them slowly and deeply every two days than to give them a little each day.

Best of success.

While the eggs are hatching try hot pepper wax. Animals and insects hate the taste of hot pepper. They will take one bite and never bite again. It is really save and all natural. Its just cayenne peppers and parafin wax. You can buy it online. You can wash it right off of your canna also. Will not effect anything.

How do I store canna bulbs over the winter?

I live in Southern Ontario %26amp; I know that the bulbs should be dug up over the winter. In what manner should I store them in my house?

How do I store canna bulbs over the winter?
I dig mine up every year after the first frost. Remove all the dirt and let them sit %26amp; dry for a couple of days. I then set them in crumpled newpaper in a basket in the basement over the winter. I have had great results so far.
Reply:Put them somewhere that they will stay cold, but not to the point of freezing. I'd suggest getting some straw to store them in; make sure it is nice and dry; fill the bottom of a cardboard box with it, and put the canna bulbs down in it in layers. Don't forget to LABEL THE BOX if you are storing several kinds of bulbs. Keep it in a dry, cool-to-cold, dark place, and they should be ready to go in the spring.
Reply:when you buy those bulbs in a store you'll find that they are packed dry, in a dry peat moss and put in plastic. So I'd suggest doing that. Even in the spring when you go to the plant nursery you find them in like deep boxes of a lot of that dry like peat moss (not planting material, this has no soil in it, it "almost" has the feel of dry shreaded paper). Then store them in a dry dark place (making sure the package won't sweat) for the winter.
Reply:Just keep the rhizomes in a frost free place. Don't let them dry out completely but don't keep them too wet or they will rot off.

I lift them and keep them in old wine crates covered with spent potting compost.

Pot them up in fresh compost in early spring to bring them on a bit before planting out.
Reply:in a cool dry spot in some paper bags

Reply:I've always kept them right in the pot .(upstate NY) If they are in the ground, dig 'em up %26amp; pot them . Let them get frosted, but not frozen , just 1-2deg %26lt; freezing . I usually wait 'til late Oct , so they won't be dormant as long , i.e. less risk of dying . After the dead leaves harden off a bit , stick the pot in a dry, cool, preferably dark (not absolutely required) place . Let them get dryish, but not 100%, dust-dry . When you water do it very sparingly (1-2 cups /~ half liter in a 5g pot, for ex., is plenty ) Probably have to water 2-3 times during the winter. When they start growing ,in late March- mid April , bring them into the light %26amp; start watering a bit more , but still sparingly, until they get some leaves fully up %26amp; open.

What causes the Canna Lily to bloom; hours of light or time periods (maturity)?

It really all depends on where you are, I've seen them growing in Greece by the side of a stream and they were beautifully lush and flowering. In England you pretty much have to dig them up to overwinter, and getting them started early for planting out in the Spring is a wise move. They need lots of sunshine, fertilizer and water to do their best for you. Feeding for flowers is a good idea if yours are reluctant to bloom.

What causes the Canna Lily to bloom; hours of light or time periods (maturity)?
I plant my rhizomes every spring and from that time they usually bloom within six weeks. They are very fast growers that love lots of sun, warmth, and water. I have started them in my home before and gotten the same results. I have very large south face windows. I dig them up every year and let them go dormat over the winter since I'm in zone 6.
Reply:With mine it has been maturity! I planted them and boy they grew nicely.... but didn't bloom until the beginning of their second year. Now they bloom yearly and maintain blooms throughout the season.

I divided a canna bulb few weeks ago and theres no growth. the bulb is in the house under flourescent lights.?
Be patient. I move my Cannas indoors this time of year because of our freezing weather. They go dormant and appear to be dead. Once springtime is here and they get outside in the sun they come right back. Don't give up on it. Just keep it lightly watered and when your weather is mild enough set it outside. Plants go through a period of shock when transplanted and divided. They need a time of rest before they start growing again.
Reply:My cannas are dormant for a good half a year. I dug them up in December (tops had died back, but corms were still good).

If your corm is sturdy, not mushy to the touch - it's probably fine. Just too early.

I put mine in a cool dark place until March or so. I'll start them inside in a pot sometimes, but mostly, I'll plant them directly in the ground about 4 weeks before the last frost date.

Do you have yours in soil? Or just a naked bulb under a light? Plant it in soil, and keep it moist, if you want it to grow early. You don't even need a light on it until it comes up. I plant mine about 6-8" down.

go ahead and pot them up - plant them in pots and they will be ready to set out when the time comes.

don't cut them back or you won't have any flowers as the tubers will not have the opportunity to build up and store energy.

hope this helps. :)

I have canna tubers stored in peat moss. They are now growing, can I cut them off and not harm spring growing.
depends on the zone in which u live, and where they r planted. If you are below zone 5 ( or northern US ) keep them in the peat and DO NOT CUT....do not water or anything...just let them hang out and then plant them in spring...about 4-6 inches . If you are south of zone 5, you should b cool to leave them in the ground - just mulch like there's no tomorrow. If you are in Midwest, like me , plant them on the south side of the house...and very close to the house. The heat from the foundation will keep the tubers viable throughout the cold winters ( hopefully ) but I still recommend all the leaves from the last grass mowing be piled on top for extra protection...good luck
Reply:do not cut them.... that happened because there was enough moisture in tha area you kept them.. but they will do just fine when it comes time to plant them out side.. i will suggest.. that you try to harden them off first before bringing them directly out since they have started growing indoors this time around.. this same thing has happened to me with these and callas..
Reply:Don't cut them back.....just leave them in the peat moss..they will be fine until time to plant.

You did know that Canna's come back each year, and you don't have to dig them up....if you want you can leave them in the ground...and in the winter just cover them with...leaves, or straw, and they will do fine.

Hope this helps you, and Happy Gardening!!
Reply:Keep them in the peat, but put them someplace cooler (not freezing though)

Cannas are not hardy in all zones and can be eaten by rodents when left in the ground during the winter.

I like to dig some and store them every year just to be on the safe side.

You might want to make sure that your tubers are not touching each other in storage this will help them maintain proper moisture levels.

Good luck, we have about 750 stored (and more in the ground) and i am ready to get them back outside but the temperature is hovering at 17F and the moles and voles have chewed up the area they will be planted in.

Moles breed in February so exterminate them now or you will have more in the spring.

I bought these for the first time this Spring. They have been left in the pots and have bloomed and rebloomed. I need to know what is meant by "dead heading " ? Also I have found small pods that are fully of small black seeds. Can these be harvested and replanted in the Spring. If so how do I go about keeping them over the Winter. Do they need to be dried out ? I could just put them in a jar but I think thry would mold. The plants I bought were very expensive so if I could use these seeds that would be great. If they are usable then how do I start them indoors next Spring. Thanks for all answers...

Dead heading is cutting off the exhausted blooms. The pods are filled with seeds harvest them just before they 'pop'. You can do that by putting a small paper bag over the pod after the flower is done, put a twisty or a rubber band on the bag to hold it and catch the seeds. Do not dead head until the pod pops. Check the in the bag every two or three days. the paper bag will allow air to circulate and if you take it off once in a while it will not mold. When the pod does pop keep the seeds in a pie pan, saucer, unused ash tray [one thing good you can use it for], or anything flat with a small lip. When the seeds have been in there for a week or so they should be dried enough to put them in a white envelope and label it species and date. Good luck
Reply:Sorry but I can't help you.
Reply:You don't say where you are. In zone 5 cannas are annuals. They MUST be dug up in the fall and stored. You need not worry about harvesting seeds. When you take the plant out of the pot there will br 5X as many tubers as there were when the plant was started. There is no need to start them in the spring. If you have stored the tubers correctly, you will see new growth on them. When your weather is OK, just replant the tubers. Sorry, I don't know how to care for them in warmer climes.
