Canna Lillys In Ohio?

Really want these, want to know if you have these do you have to dig them up every fall %26amp; What time of year to you plant them?

Canna Lillys In Ohio?
Well we are in Ohio and we have to dig them up every year. We didn't once and lost them all.....they were next to a foundation on the house too....with a thick mulch of autumn leaves. I would just plan on digging them up. Ohio weather is pretty unpredictable ya know... I'd plant them in the spring. The end of May.
Reply:plant then in june. at frost they die to the groung and look dead. in your area this will happen in october or maybe november. the best part of the canna lily is that they tollerate and thrive in full sun and also flower till november. in the fall after frost, cut the plant and dig it up. then store the bulb till spring. cannas are really worth buying. they flower all the time in full sun and if you dont get a flower you have amazing tropical foilage
Reply:I had Calla lillies growing right next to the foundation of my house on the southern side of the house when we lived 30 miles off the Ohio border. (near New Castle, PA) They wintered over fairly well. Putting mulch over them may help.

As for Cannas, the tall flowers that are orange, yellow, or red. Yes, you'll definitely want to bring those in. I had to bring them in to overwinter when I lived in the south.
Reply:I have these, and no you don't have to dig them and replant each year. The idea of digging them up each fall is to save the bulbs from frost, but we have never had a problem and ours are in a raised bed next to the house. To help keep them from freezing out you can mulch the flower bed well for the fall/winter months. Plants like the morning sun, with very well drained soil.

Hope this helps.
