Can ginger be grown from ginger root bought at the gro. store?

I really don't know any thing about growing ginger. I bought ginger root at the gro. store and it appeard to have new growth coming out, simular to a canna flower root.

you are right in comparing it to a canna root they are both botanically classified as rhizomes ,the root spreads horizontally , a little below the soil surface.It grows quite easily from store bought ginger %26amp; if you have spotted new tips likely to sprout ,it is the right time to plant ..It grows by sending up shoots with attractive pointed green leaves , it is time to harvest when these leaves start to fade %26amp; the stem shrivels %26amp; bends over,then you dig it up %26amp; will be amazed at the spread of the root.Good to take a before %26amp; after picture for comparison.

When it blooms, it will be a small cone shaped greenish yellow flower on a short stem, that is easy to over look if you do not pay close attention to your plant. Choose a tuber with several nodes, plunk it in dirt, water.

Reply:Yes, I tried it myself and left it growing until winter and then dug the root up to my delight I saw that it had multiplied.

Sometimes they are sprayed or irradiated to prevent or delay growth. Go to some organic store and get it from there instead
