I live in Michigan do Cannas bulbs have to be dug up in the Fall?

Yes, I would dig up your canna bulbs. I have seen some cannas survive a very mild winter, next to a building, but I normally would not chance it. What I have done is: dig them up, cut off the stalk, knock off the soil, let them dry a bit, and then store them in a bushel basket or box in the basment (where it is dry and cool). I don't bury them in sand or anything like that and they turn out fine the next year.
